Brian Fallon Shares the Reasons Behind Feeling Unwell While Singing Alongside Bruce Springsteen

Brian Fallon of The Gaslight Anthem recently shared anecdotes about his experiences with Bruce Springsteen, including a memorable moment that left him feeling unwell during their joint performance.

Contrary to expectations, it was Springsteen who extended the invitation to Fallon to join him on stage. However, during the show, the lead singer of The Gaslight Anthem wasn’t in the best condition.

In a recent interview with Louder Sound, Fallon reflected on the first time he met Springsteen and recounted why he felt sick during their 2009 performance:

“I step outside, and there’s Bruce Springsteen walking towards me with his sunglasses on. He says, ‘Hey, can I play your song with you?’ So, literally, five minutes later, we’re on stage at Glastonbury, performing ‘The ’59 Sound’ with Bruce Springsteen in this tent.”

However, the surreal experience didn’t end there; it took an even crazier turn that night:

“And it got even more surreal that night because I went out and sang a song with him during his headlining set in front of ninety thousand people. Beforehand, I was like, ‘I’m gonna throw up,’ I was so nervous.”

Fallon Pens a Song for a Duet with Springsteen

Raised on his music, Fallon had the chance to meet his hero with a brief ‘hi’ and a handshake. According to him, the real introduction happened when Springsteen’s son discovered The Gaslight Anthem and presented it to his father, suggesting that it resembled his music but with a punk edge.

Springsteen then reached out to Fallon, inviting him to perform during the same set. Following their joint performance, the two spent time together, and Springsteen went a step further by asking Fallon to compose a song for them to duet on The Gaslight Anthem’s latest album, ‘History Books.’ Continuing the narrative, Fallon shared:

“I’ve developed a pretty good relationship with him. He’s like, ‘I’ve accumulated a wealth of life wisdom, and if you ever want some, just ask, and I’ll share my insights.’ When it came to the new Gaslight record, he suggested, ‘Why not write a duet for us to sing?’ Despite being initially overwhelmed by the idea, Fallon eventually crafted a song:

“I spent months thinking, ‘I can’t do this; I can’t write a duet for Bruce Springsteen.’ Then I realized, ‘I’m not going to do that. I’m going to write a Gaslight Anthem record and not stress about which song is for Bruce.’ When the time came to choose a song, it was clear, ‘It’s that one, it has to be ‘History Books.’ We all knew it.” The duet is featured in the self-titled album released on October 27, 2023.
