Elon Musk Mocks Green Day for Billie Joe Armstrong’s MAGA Lyrics

Elon Musk recently took to Twitter to playfully tease Green Day about Billie Joe Armstrong’s MAGA lyrics. During a New Year’s Eve show, Armstrong altered the lyrics of Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ to comment on the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement, live on the ‘Dick Clark New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’ TV broadcast. In response to this news, Musk tweeted:

“Green Day goes from raging against the machine to milquetoastedly raging for it.” A user on the platform then left a comment under Musk’s post, saying: “Milquetoast. Noun. Milque·toast, ˈmilk-ˌtōst. Synonyms of milquetoast: a timid, meek, or unassertive person. You’ll learn stuff here on X.”

Live Alteration of ‘American Idiot’ Lyrics

During his performance, Armstrong modified the lyrics, substituting the original line where he declared his disassociation with the ‘redneck agenda’: “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.”

This alteration quickly caught the audience’s attention, prompting various reactions from both the live audience and those watching from home. Some appreciated the change, viewing it as a poignant critique of MAGA and former President Donald Trump, while others found it to be disrespectful towards MAGA supporters.

Green Day’s Track Record of Political Statements

Green Day has consistently expressed their views on Trump. This summer, they created T-shirts featuring the word ‘nimrod’ over Trump’s image to raise funds for wildfire relief in Maui. Throughout their 2017 tour, Armstrong often shouted, ‘Forget you, Trump!’ before launching into the song ‘American Idiot.’

Armstrong also incorporated the chant ‘No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA’ during the American Music Awards performance of ‘Bang Bang.’ Interestingly, the New Year’s Eve show wasn’t the first instance of Armstrong substituting ‘redneck agenda’ with ‘MAGA agenda.’ He made a similar change during a 2019 show at the iHeartRadio Music Festival. In a 2020 interview with Kerrang!, the frontman shared his perspective on Trump:

“I think that he’s the most divisive leader of a country since Adolf Hitler. It sounds melodramatic to say it, but living in America, it’s just true.” In other news, Green Day’s upcoming album, ‘Saviors,’ is set to release on January 19, 2024. The band has indicated that the album will cover a range of topics, including politics. Some of the released songs from the album include ‘The American Dream Is Killing Me,’ ‘Look Ma, No Brains!,’ and ‘Dilemma.’ Check out the tweets below.
