In a recent interview with Illinois Entertainer in January, John 5 delved into his experience with Mötley Crüe. While the public learned about his inclusion in the band shortly after Mick Mars retired from touring, the guitarist revealed that he was approached for the role while Mars was still an active member. Discussing his connection with the group, he shared:
“We’re always on the phone, chitchatting about our lives, discussing things we have to do during the day, and just doing what friends do. I first received the call near the end of the Freaks On Parade tour when I was with Rob Zombie. Mötley was still on tour, so I got a call saying, ‘Hey, Mick’s gonna retire. Is this something you’d be interested in?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I would love to.'” John 5 also reminisced about his previous collaborations with the Mötley Crüe members:
“I was working on ‘The Dirt’ [movie] with them. I contributed to that song ‘The Dirt’ and the other tracks on the movie soundtrack album they released. I’ve collaborated with Nikki [Sixx] on various projects in the past, and I’ve also worked with Tommy [Lee] in the past, so I’ve always been kind of in the family.”
John 5’s Deep Admiration for Mick Mars
John 5 officially became a part of Mötley Crüe during their Stadium Tour with Def Leppard in 2022. Upon introducing him as the new guitarist, the band also announced that Mick Mars would not be participating in the remainder of the tour and future live performances due to health issues.
Subsequently, legal disputes emerged between Mars and the other members of Mötley Crüe, leading to tension in their relationship. Despite the challenges, the former Rob Zombie guitarist expressed his admiration for the original band member, stating:
“Mick’s tone is incredible, and his playing is incredible. I had to change [guitar amp] heads; I adjusted my sound. I still use a Telecaster, but Mick also used a Telecaster during ‘Girls, Girls, Girls.’ He used the Telecaster quite a bit. I have such respect and love for Mars, and he knows that.”
Mick Mars’ Positive Response to Mötley Crüe’s New Guitarist
The feud led to harsh remarks on both sides, with Mick Mars claiming that his former bandmates attempted to strip him of his rights to their music. The allegations of using backing tracks during live shows only added to the tension throughout 2023.
Despite the ongoing disputes, John 5 and Mick Mars maintained a positive relationship, as indicated by the new member during a May 2023 conversation with Eddie Trunk. When asked about how the former guitarist responded to being replaced, he explained:
“Me and Mick, we talk all the time. We exchange Christmas gifts and things like that, and when I was announced as the guitar player, he was one of the very first texts that I got, and he said, ‘You’re gonna kill it!’ It’s good; it’s not like it’s some stranger coming in. We have great respect for each other.”
The Guitarists Have Plans for New Projects
Presently, John 5 is in the process of creating his inaugural studio album with Mötley Crüe. Simultaneously, Mick Mars is gearing up for the release of his solo debut album, ‘The Other Side Of Mars,’ scheduled for February 2023.
