Loki Season 2’s Most Important Relationship Isn’t Loki and Sylvie

With great success from its first season, Loki Season 2 is one of the most anticipated TV projects of 2023 for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series that follows the God of Mischief after he finds himself at the Time Variance Authority (TVA) is the first of the MCU shows to receive a second season. With the lead actors of the series all signed on to return, and a few other actors promoted to show regulars, the relationships from the first season are going to be essential to the TVA storyline, Loki and the multiverse moving forward. But the most important relationship for the season and future of the MCU isn’t between Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie — it’s Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Ravonna Renslayer and Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror.

During a packed season finale, Renslayer’s understanding of life is dismantled as she found out the Timekeepers that she once was fully devoted to are fake. This revelation along with the surprising fact that all TVA agents are variants throws the entire TVA into chaos and leaves Renslayer on the outs. But in her final moments of Season 1, Renslayer receives files from He Who Remains (aka Kang) and walks through a time door to embark on a secret mission. Among the various revelations her faith remains in him, setting the stage for their inevitable union and love that spans many timelines.

Kang and Renslayer Is a Love for All Time

At the end of Season 1, Ravonna Renslayer is more confident and poised than before, prepared to not burn the TVA to the ground but take control of it. She notes that only one person has free will — “the one in charge” — which leads her cryptic answer of “in search of free will” to where she’s going in her final scene. Audiences might not know where or when she went, but one could easily assume she went to find Kang. Their relationship could be the key to what happens in the future of the MCU, especially with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty on its way. Renslayer isn’t necessarily his successor, but his on-and-off again lover in multiple timelines. Their relationship is far more important than just the present, however. It also has heavy implications on the future and past.

The love between Kang and Renslayer can be traced back to the creation of diverging timelines and variants. After Kang brings the Avengers back in time to destroy them in the attempt to impress Renslayer and marry her, she sacrifices her life to save him. In his sadness, he tries to escape her fate with time travel. In another timeline, Renslayer is a time-traveling assassin called Terminatrix, who aligns and splits with Kang the Conqueror multiple times. In a battle with the Avengers and Fantastic Four versus Kang, the latter nearly sacrifices himself to save her. While she cares for him, she disguises herself as Kang to rule his kingdom in the future.

For as long as variants have existed, Kang and Renslayer have been connected. Although audiences have seen a different interpretation of Renslayer’s character in the first season compared to her comic appearances (not a princess, but as a judge), one thing fans can be assured of is Renslayer’s story and relationship with Kang will still be a major part of what happens with the TVA and the greater MCU.

Kang and Renslayer Will Give Lokie a Bigger and Bolder Season 2

Going into Season 2, Ravonna Renslayer’s allegiances are clear: she will remain loyal to the TVA, and the one who most likely created it. Mbatha-Raw has already divulged that this season of Loki will be even “more surreal” than the first. “Ravonna is a powerful presence” in this upcoming season. It will finally answer fans’ questions of Renslayer’s whereabouts after she used her TemPad to flee the TVA. Hopefully what was in the files is what she received from Kang. Season 2 could be the beginnings of her role as Kang’s confidante, lover and antagonist in the MCU. Renslayer’s progression can quickly go from well-intentioned peacekeeper to Kang’s right-hand at the end of time.

The TVA’s influence will continue to emerge throughout the MCU and Loki Season 2 will give audiences better insight to what that influence will look like. While everyone has their eyes on Loki and Sylvie, their eyes should be glued to Ravonna Renslayer and her inevitable rise to Kang’s side. The true powerful romance that will push the MCU forward is not between the two variants that began to fall in love, but the no-nonsense judge of time and the only man with free will.

All episodes of Marvel Studios’ Loki Season 1 are currently streaming on Disney+. Season 2 is slated to premiere in the summer of 2023.
