Matt Skiba Opens Up About His Sole Regret in Taking Over for Tom DeLonge in Blink-182

In a recent episode of the Tuna On Toast with Stryker podcast, Matt Skiba reflected on his time as Tom DeLonge’s replacement in Blink-182 and revealed the one regret he holds.

Joining the band in 2015 after DeLonge’s departure for personal reasons, Skiba spent seven years with Blink-182. However, his tenure came to an end in 2022 when it was announced that Tom would be making a return. Skiba shared a humorous anecdote about an awkward moment during his early days with the band, recounting a photoshoot faux pas:

“At my first photoshoot with Blink-182, I didn’t even realize I was wearing Hurley [clothing company] stuff to rehearsal. I forgot that Blink had this association with Hurley forever. So, when I showed up with a baseball hat and a Hurley T-shirt, everyone was like, ‘What the heck? Are you trying to be Tom?’ I was caught off guard, thinking, ‘I didn’t know we were taking a picture!'”

Reflecting on Regrets and Responses to Unintentional Tom DeLonge Impersonation

Continuing his reflection, he highlighted the one aspect he wishes he could alter from his time with the band:

“There was this photo we took by the loading dock, and I was sporting my oblivious Hurley shirt. Little did I know how it would be perceived, but that was the one thing where fans were like, ‘Dude, don’t do that.’ I was like, ‘Do what? Oh, right.’ If I had thought about it, I might have changed into a different T-shirt just to avoid being ‘that guy.’ So, that’s the one thing I’d reconsider.”

Skiba’s Take on the Evolving Band Dynamics

After Blink-182’s announcement of Tom DeLonge’s return to the band, Matt Skiba took to Instagram to share his thoughts: “Congratulations to the homies Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, and Travis Barker on their triumphant Blink-182 return/reunion and the release of their new single today! I’m sure there’s a joke in here about releases and happy endings I’m missing, but I am truly grateful for my time with Blink-182, and I am genuinely happy you guys are a band and a family again. Thanks to the band and all the Blink fans for having me. You were delicious! Matt from Chicago, with love.”

In a subsequent interview with Vulture, Skiba addressed the rumors, expressing that he felt more disappointed than betrayed after the announcement. He clarified that the news didn’t catch him off guard, emphasizing the friendship between him, DeLonge, and the rest of the band. Skiba mentioned Tom’s past support for his own band, Alkaline Trio, and conveyed his happiness at the reunion of the original band members. You can view the complete interview below.
