Michael Stipe of R.E.M. Reminisces About His Initial Encounter with Taylor Swift

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Michael Stipe of R.E.M. shared his thoughts on the first meeting with Taylor Swift while working on his debut solo record. Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff, Matty Healy from the 1975 (who was dating Swift at the time), and Phoebe Bridgers coincidentally converged at Electric Lady Studios, resulting in an unplanned gathering. Upon encountering Swift, Stipe extended his hand and greeted her with the words: “You must be Taylor.

Taylor’s Reaction to Michael

In her response, Swift remarked: “Jack and Matty were mentioning they had lengthy conversations with you yesterday. They were like, ‘Best conversation!’ They were thrilled to be engaged in a dialogue with you!”

Stipe visited Electric Lady Studios in May to work on new tracks, including ‘I’m the Charge’ and a fresh rendition of his 2019 charity single ‘Your Capricious Soul.’ During his time there, he also collaborated with Courtney Love on another project. The sessions were conducted with producer Andy LeMaster and featured the talents of LCD Soundsystem drummer Pat Mahoney.

Stipe’s Solo Album Venture

The singer is gradually crafting his first full set of songs since the disbandment of his group in 2011. Despite initially aiming for an early 2023 album release, unforeseen events such as family emergencies, art exhibits, relocation, and the challenges of the COVID pandemic led to unexpected delays. Speaking to Departures last December, Stipe shared insights about his upcoming album:

“I’m in the process of working on my first solo album. I’m collaborating with various musicians, and if things go as planned—well, they should since I’m the one footing the bill—each song will have a distinct flavor. I’m flying solo without any management or label. For the first time in my adult life, I don’t have a contract with anyone except myself.” Since the dissolution of R.E.M., Stipe has released several solo singles, including ‘Your Capricious Soul’ in 2019 and ‘Drive to the Ocean’ in 2020. Additionally, he served as a co-producer on the electroclash duo Fischerspooner’s 2018 album ‘Sir.
