See Patrick Stewart In First Clip From Star Trek: Picard Season 3

Patrick Stewart is back for one last adventure in Star Trek: Picard season 3, and finally we have our first look at the final season. In a short clip shared during Kate Mulgrew’s Ready Room show on YouTube, viewers watch Jean-Luc Picard track down a strange alert message arriving on his 20-year old Enterprise-D communicator. While we, like the greatest Captain in the history of the franchise, don’t know who is sending the message, we can assume this will kick off the season’s storyline, promising to unite The Next Generation crew one last time.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 reunites Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Worf (Michael Dorn), William Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), and Brent Spiner (Lore, Data’s twin). Jeri Ryan, returning as Seven of Nine, brings a little Voyager to the TNG reunion, while Worf’s involvement promises to tie into Deep Space Nine, making this the greatest crossover in franchise history since Star Trek: Generations. Even the villains of the upcoming season, have connections to previous adventures, with Amanda Plummer, the daughter of Christopher Plummer, having a mysterious tie to the crew’s past.

Christopher Plummer played General Chang in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, which served as the send-off for the cast of the original series. Bringing his daughter in to play a villain in Star Trek: Picard season 3 is poetic, and a beautiful closing of the circle that most franchises never get to do.

The goal for Star Trek: Picard season 3 is to be a satisfying send-off for The Next Generation crew, and so far, everyone involved is saying all the right things to respect fan expectations while not revealing any information about the ultimate fate of Jean-Luc Picard. Season 1 of Picard was a smash hit for the then-fledgling Paramount+ network, with January 2020, the series debut month, setting a record for new subscribers. Season 2 was delayed due to Covid, releasing in 2022, but season 3 was filmed at the same time, allowing for a much faster turnaround time.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 debuts on February 16th, 2023, and will hopefully give a better conclusion than Star Trek: Nemesis did for The Next Generation crew back in 2002. The feature film ended with Riker leaving to captain the Titan, which is featured in the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks, while leaving the door open for further adventures featuring the crew. That time has come, and if the high quality of the first two seasons of Picard are any indication, this will finally, after 20 years, close the book on one of the most successful eras of sci-fi television in history.

Season 1 dealt with the trauma of Picard’s time assimilated by the Borg, while season 2 brought back Q, perhaps Picard’s greatest enemy. With a willingness to explore every nook and cranny of the franchise, Star Trek: Picard season 3 is shaping up to be the most satisfying season of Star Trek ever created. The prior two seasons each set records for Paramount+, making the expectations for the upcoming season incredibly high, but if anyone can meet those lofty expectations, it’s Patrick Stewart, in his best role for one last season.
