The first theatrical movie to be shot above Earth’s atmosphere, The Challenge, released its trailer.
Central Partnership, The Challenge’s distributor, released its official, non-subtitled trailer for the Russian space movie filmed on the International Space Station. In it, a cosmonaut can be seen working outside the ISS, only to be thrown across its panels when the station’s booster rockets ignite. This is followed by another cosmonaut discovering one of her team members unconscious inside the station, forcing the crew to operate on him in a zero-G environment. This, in turn, requires sending a heart surgeon named Evgenia Belyaeva (Yulia Peresild) from Earth to the ISS via Soyuz spacecraft so she can perform the surgery.
As reported by the Indian website RepublicWorld, cosmonaut and The Challenge co-star Anton Shkaplerov spoke to The Russian News Agency TASS on how director Klim Shipenko shot this movie on a limited timetable. “During the shooting, we received the main light from the windows, while every 45 minutes there is a sunrise and sunset, so Klim had to constantly maintain a certain lighting situation due to artificial lighting,” Shkaplerov explained. “He constantly had to turn on certain lamps, direct them in a certain direction, so that when people watched a film on the screen, they did not notice the change in the cut-off situation.”
The Challenge began production in fall 2021, more than a year after Mission Impossible actor Tom Cruise — who similarly wishes to film a movie in outer space — brought Edge of Tomorrow collaborator Doug Liman onboard as director. According to Universal Pictures Chairwoman Donna Langley, the untitled movie will star Cruise as “a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth,” leading to him performing a spacewalk outside the ISS. This movie currently lacks a release date but will be financed by Universal and made in conjunction with NASA and SpaceX founder/Twitter CEO Elon Musk.
Last year, Cruise saw critical and commercial success with the release of Top Gun: Maverick. The long-awaited Top Gun sequel was the highest-grossing film of 2022, making over $1,488 billion at the global box office and over $700 million in the United States. His next film, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, is currently set for a July 14 release date, with its sequel dropping less than a year later. Both movies will be directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed each Mission Impossible franchise entry since 2015’s Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.
Directed by Klim Shipenko, The Challenge releases April 12.
