Vince Gill and Paul Franklin Delve Into ‘Sweet Memories’ and Honor the Musical Legacy of Ray Price: “The Intention Behind This Is Reverence

Vince Gill and Paul Franklin’s homage album, “Sweet Memories: The Music of Ray Price and the Cherokee Cowboys,” shines a light on many of Price’s less-recognized songs. Notably, the album has earned Gill and Franklin a Grammy nomination, with the track “Kissing Your Picture (Is So Cold)” vying for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

In “Sweet Memories,” these exceptionally talented musicians pay tribute to a legendary artist. Diverging from the norm of covering the biggest hits, Gill and Franklin opted for deep cuts from Price’s extensive catalog. Their intention was to introduce new listeners to the timeless artist and evoke nostalgia for longtime fans. Recently, Gill and Franklin spoke to CMT about the album.

“I’m a Ray Price Fiend”

Gill shared that putting together the album was an enlightening experience for him. “I’m a Ray Price enthusiast, but I never knew he did ‘Sweet Memories.’ I never knew he’d done ‘Weary Blues,’ a Hank Williams song,” Gill revealed. “Several of these songs I never knew. It was fun to find that out.”

Selecting deep cuts from Price’s repertoire was not a challenge for the duo. However, they anticipated the difficulty of being compared to Price’s original recordings. “The obvious thing that people are going to, unfortunately, say when they hear something like this, ‘Oh, it’s not as good as the original,'” Gill acknowledged. “They’ll say, ‘I like the original way better, I like the melody of the original way better.’ This is just intended to be inspired by us to begin with.”

Gill and Franklin embarked on the Sweet Memories project not with the intention of surpassing Price but with deep respect. “I think the audience that’s our age and older, they’re going to love this stuff. That’s a given because they don’t get to hear much music like this anymore,” he expressed. “The intention behind this is reverence.”

Reflecting on their Grammy nomination, Gill expressed his pride in being nominated alongside Paul. “His friendship and musicianship are unparalleled,” Gill stated. Franklin added, “After decades of playing music with my friend Vince, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine a Grammy nomination. This is so cool.”
